Yr Ysgol Gymraeg

Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth, located on Plascrug Avenue in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, is the first designated Welsh-medium primary school in Wales, founded in 1939 by Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards. Originally named Ysgol Gymraeg yr Urdd, it began as a private school with just seven pupils and has grown significantly to approximately 375 students. The school is notable for its strong Welsh language immersion, with 95% of pupils speaking Welsh at a first language level, though only 65% come from Welsh-speaking homes. The school has a rich history including notable staff such as the Welsh children's author Mary Vaughan Jones. It has expanded rapidly since the 1980s, reflecting growing parental recognition of bilingual education's academic value. The school employs 18 teachers and over 35 support staff.
