1 min read

Assistive technology (AT) includes any device, equipment, or system that helps students with disabilities perform functions they could not accomplish otherwise, or helps them perform tasks more easily. AT ranges from low-tech tools to sophisticated computer systems.

Types of Assistive Technology

Low-tech AT includes pencil grips, slant boards, and graphic organizers. Mid-tech includes calculators, audio recorders, and talking dictionaries. High-tech includes text-to-speech software, speech-to-text programs, communication devices, and specialized computer access tools.

AT in IEPs

IDEA requires IEP teams to consider assistive technology for every student with a disability. If AT is needed, it must be provided at no cost. Schools must also provide training on AT use.
