Awen Project

The Awen Project is a pioneering democratic learning community located in Dinas Powys, Vale of Glamorgan, near The Spinney, Twyncyn. Founded in 2019 by Charlotte Church, inspired by democratic schools such as Sands School in Devon, it offers a unique educational model where young people are encouraged to be themselves and follow their passions. The school emphasizes a democratic community where students have a powerful voice in decisions affecting their learning and environment. It operates as a small, free-to-attend learning community that is co-constructed with families and run by students, focusing on creativity, entrepreneurialism, and holistic well-being. The curriculum is personalized and adaptable, fostering ownership of learning and encouraging experimentation, debate, and creativity without fear of failure. The Awen Project also supports the opening of new learning communities as part of a wider network.
