Education in Sweden
Sweden is known for its progressive, child-centred approach to education that emphasises creativity, critical thinking, and equality. Swedish schools aim to develop the whole child, with a strong focus on democratic values and student wellbeing alongside academic achievement.
Swedish education includes förskola (preschool, ages 1-5), grundskola (compulsory school, ages 6-16), and gymnasium (upper secondary, ages 16-19). Sweden operates a school choice system where families can select between municipal and independent (friskolor) schools, all publicly funded. The curriculum emphasises knowledge, skills, and values equally. International schools in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö offer English-language education.
