About Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn
Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn is a bilingual coeducational secondary school for pupils aged 11 to 16, located on Station Road (Ffordd yr Orsaf) in Tywyn, Gwynedd, United Kingdom. Originally opened in 1894 as Towyn Intermediate School in a building called Brynarfor, the school has a long history and was recognized in 2015 by the Welsh Government as the secondary school with the highest standards in Wales according to its categorisation system. The school is naturally bilingual, serving a community where about 19% of pupils come from Welsh-speaking homes. It offers a comprehensive curriculum and supports a friendly, caring, and supportive environment that encourages academic success and personal development through activities such as sports, music, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The school has approximately 388 to 400 pupils and around 15 full-time teaching staff, making it one of the smaller secondary schools in Wales. It actively involves parents in the educational well-being of pupils and serves a diverse student body, including those from Welsh-speaking families and newcomers with limited Welsh knowledge.
