L’Istituto Omnicomprensivo abbraccia un’area di competenza assai estesa, distribuita su due comuni montani della Provincia di Pistoia: San Marcello Piteglio e Abetone Cutigliano, un territorio da sempre caratterizzato da difficoltà di comunicazione con le principali direttrici di traffico e da un certo indebolimento, negli ultimi tempi, di quelle attività economiche che avevano svolto nei decenni trascorsi un ruolo portante sia dal punto di vista economico che sociale e culturale.
