# Assistive Technology — Definition & Explanation

**In short:** Equipment or systems that help students with disabilities access curriculum, communicate, or complete tasks they could not otherwise do.
**Assistive technology (AT)** includes any device, equipment, or system that helps students with disabilities perform functions they could not accomplish otherwise, or helps them perform tasks more easily. AT ranges from low-tech tools to sophisticated computer systems.

## Types of Assistive Technology

Low-tech AT includes pencil grips, slant boards, and graphic organizers. Mid-tech includes calculators, audio recorders, and talking dictionaries. High-tech includes text-to-speech software, speech-to-text programs, communication devices, and specialized computer access tools.

## AT in IEPs

IDEA requires IEP teams to consider assistive technology for every student with a disability. If AT is needed, it must be provided at no cost. Schools must also provide training on AT use.
