The school is named after 'Bro Myrddin,' meaning 'Myrddin's country,' referencing the Welsh name for Merlin, linking the school to local Welsh heritage. It is the only designated Welsh-medium secondary school in Carmarthenshire and became a Category CC school in 2016, meaning all subjects except English are taught through Welsh for new students.
