Founded in 1903 originally as the William Jones Elementary School by the Haberdashers’ Company, it became Monmouth Secondary School in 1948 and transitioned to a fully comprehensive school in 1977. The school has approximately 1,700 students and 190 staff, including a popular Sixth Form of around 350 students and a Specialist Resource Base for about 55 students. The campus spans approximately 19 acres and includes extensive playing fields with floodlit Astroturf, rugby and football pitches, an athletics track, and basketball courts. The school benefits from a modern, award-winning building completed in 2018 under the 21st Century Schools programme, emphasizing a knowledge-rich curriculum and inclusive education. It is known for its strong community values, high standards, and a culture of continuous improvement driven by transparency and open dialogue. The school also hosts the only fully comprehensive school rowing club in England and Wales, with students achieving national and international success.
