The school traces its origins back to 1542, when it was established as a free grammar school under the patronage of King Henry VIII, making it one of the oldest schools in Wales. The current school is located on Old Hereford Road and provides a seamless educational experience by combining primary, secondary, and sixth form education in one institution, eliminating the traditional divide between primary and secondary phases. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation for all learners, with a focus on smooth transitions and a joined-up approach to education. The school also offers facilities for children with additional learning needs and supports a wide range of enrichment activities. The new campus, completed in recent years, features modern classrooms, specialist facilities, and spaces for community engagement, reflecting its commitment to both academic excellence and community involvement. ## Recent parent reviews - **1/5** — RUN, DON’T WALK: in my time at the school i experienced a lot of bullying and racism and when i went to the teachers they said it was banter and did nothing about it. My maths teacher picked on me in class for asking questions about how to answer our upon coming maths gcse paper, i remember he called me stupid in-front of everyone. Kids can't be blamed for bad parenting and bad behaviour policy. Actually, there is no behaviour policy at this school. The teachers have their own policy going on in their classrooms and each teacher is different - no consistency, hence crazy kids. I remember getting my vaccination done for covid and I was entitled to a day off according to the gov, but the staff made such a big deal out of it and tried to make me feel bad … *(Jul 2022)* - **1/5** — It’s a bad school don’t send your kids there: Do not send your kids here I am currently enrolled there and the amount of bullying I have been through is absolutely vile but they do not do anything about it, I myself am a nerodivergent kid and suffer with Dyscalculia and dyspraxia they do nothing about it and refuse to help me the only acceptable teacher I know of is my form tutor. She will listen to what you have to say and not report it unless it is worrying or threatening you or another student or teacher. *(May 2022)* - **1/5** — A School that ought to be a future prison: Some of the kids are Just plain awful ,Bullying is rife and is mostly ignored ,there is no discipline for the awful kids these rotten kids and I suspect equally rotten parents run the show . There is no respect . I would even say that the teachers are too scared to deal with the bullying for fear of reprisals from the vile bullies .There is no order even after school as they descend on the heath the awful kids are loud and disruptive and still continue bullying other kids. This has been going on… *(Apr 2022)* - **1/5** — for your childs sake please do not send them here.: i went here and got bullied so badly that it caused two of my attempts i left year 11 in 2020 i learnt nothing and failed nearly all my gcses teachers did nothing to help me at all. i never went classes just to avoid having things thrown at me or said to me. there is also a big problem with racism and homophobia this school needs to sort themselves out. *(Jul 2021)* - **1/5** — Bullying is not acceptable: Bullying in year 7 around 7 kids bulling one kid not acceptable teachers do nothing about it *(May 2021)* - **2/5** — School is bad: School does nothing to prevent bullying, homophobia is normalised and teachers are unable to control classes. *(Feb 2021)* - **1/5** — inadequate: unhelpful staff and badly behaved kids *(Jan 2021)* ## Other schools in Abergavenny - [Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni](https://schoolbrowse.com/gb/abergavenny/ysgol-gymraeg-y-fenni-25511) — 5.0/5 (1 reviews) - [Llanfoist Fawr Primary School](https://schoolbrowse.com/gb/abergavenny/llanfoist-fawr-primary-school-25960) --- Source: SchoolBrowse (https://schoolbrowse.com) — reviews and ratings are user-submitted by parents.
